Education & Outreach

Legal Education

The Great North Innocence Project legal team teaches at four law schools across the Great North region: University of Minnesota Law School, Mitchell Hamline School of Law, University of North Dakota Law School, and University of South Dakota Law School.

Each year, GNIP lawyers teach courses on wrongful convictions and supervise innocence clinics. Through these courses, our region’s future lawyers and judges are trained to spot the main causes of wrongful convictions and remedy wrongful convictions through post conviction litigation. By participating in the innocence clinics, law students gain hands-on experience investigating and supporting the litigation of actual innocence cases.

Community Outreach

Great North Innocence Project staff and volunteers conduct outreach through speaking engagements, tabling at community events, presenting CLE trainings, and sharing more about GNIP’s services at correctional institutions. Last year, GNIP speakers reached over 2,000 community members who learned about GNIP’s mission and work.

Examples of where GNIP speakers have previously presented include:

  • Legal professional associations
  • Law enforcement groups
  • Corporate legal departments
  • Houses of worship
  • Rotary clubs
  • Libraries
  • Schools
  • Civic organizations

Wrongful Convictions Book Club

Join the Great North Innocence Project Wrongful Convictions Book Club. Gather with GNIP staff, supporters, and community members to ask and answer, what are the systemic and human causes and consequences of wrongful convictions?

The Wrongful Convictions Book Club meets quarterly in February, May, August, and November.
